NTA Good Point !

This ticket grants you access to an energetic dance show that blends Japanese tradition with modernity, held at the ‘Asakusa Mokubakan’—a popular theatre in Asakusa with over 100 years of history—and includes a guided commentary.
You can enjoy spectacular dances and thrilling sword-fighting scenes performed by actors (including onnagata) dressed in beautiful kimonos from a distance so close that you can feel the heat of the stage. The package includes a pre-show commentary by English-speaking staff and a complimentary drink, making this a unique activity that allows you to casually experience Japan’s local and authentic theatre culture.

Enjoyable even without a language barrier: As the show centres on visual and musical performances—including song, dance, sword fighting and flamboyant costumes—you can thoroughly enjoy it even if you don’t understand Japanese. With commentary provided by an English-speaking guide, it is also ideal for guiding international visitors.

A blend of tradition and modern trends: The programme incorporates everything from traditional Japanese instruments (such as the shamisen and taiko drums) to contemporary pop, Western music and anime songs, ensuring there is something to appeal to a wide range of audiences.

An intimate, homely atmosphere with the actors close at hand The intimate atmosphere unique to small-scale theatres—unlike that of large venues—is a major attraction. You can see even the subtlest expressions on the actors’ faces, and there are opportunities for commemorative photos and the experience of giving a traditional Japanese ‘tip’ (ohineri or ohana).

Daily performances with a changing line-up The theatre companies and programmes change regularly, and as the content of the performances varies every day, there are always fresh surprises to be had, no matter how many times you visit.

Experience the living history of Asakusa. Immerse yourself in the authentic culture of ‘Taishu Engeki’—Asakusa’s entertainment tradition dating back to the Meiji era—at its historic home, a venue cherished by locals to this day.

Photography and social media sharing are ‘officially permitted’. Whilst photography during performances is strictly prohibited in many theatres, here you are usually allowed to take photos during dance shows (though filming is often not permitted). It is a rare opportunity to capture your favourite actors in all their splendour and preserve those memories on the spot.

Experience the unique ‘ohineri’ (tipping) culture. There is a tradition of ‘ohineri’ where audience members place a monetary gift (known as ‘ohana’) directly into the collar of an actor’s kimono or hand it to them. On this tour, the guide will teach you the proper etiquette, allowing you to experience the origins of Japan’s traditional ‘oshi-katsu’ (supporting your favourite performer), where audience and performers interact physically.

An astonishing sense of pace with performances changing ‘every day’ Unlike conventional theatres, which repeat the same programme for months on end, popular theatre changes its repertoire daily. The content may even differ between matinee and evening performances, meaning no two shows are ever the same. This sense of a live performance, unique to that very day and moment, is something you simply won’t find in other theatres.

Interaction during the ‘send-off’ after the performance: After the show, there is a custom known as ‘send-off’ (omisoiri), where the actors line up at the theatre entrance to see the audience off in person. The closeness of being able to exchange greetings with your favourite actors at close quarters, or take commemorative photos together, is a luxury simply unheard of in other commercial theatre.

Includes an ‘English-speaking guide commentary’ for first-timers (exclusive to this package) Whilst popular theatre is typically a niche world frequented by local regulars, this package includes commentary from English-speaking staff. By learning about the history, highlights and unique customs (such as how to tip) in advance, even first-time visitors can enjoy the experience from the outset as if they were part of the community, without feeling like an outsider.

The Excitement of Asakusa’s ‘Downtown Community’ It is not merely a performance to watch; there is a unique atmosphere where the shouts and applause of regulars, and the whole theatre, are enveloped in a sense of unity akin to a family. The greatest appeal lies in experiencing the very pulse of Asakusa not as a show for tourists, but as a ‘living culture’.
