What You Will Gain from This Tour
1. Learn Mugairyu Iaido, widely regarded as Japan’s most powerful sword style, directly from a master with the 9th-dan (9th-grade) rank—the highest ranking in the art.
2. Learn about the history of Japanese martial arts and the etiquette of bushido.
3. Fully immerse yourself in the Samurai experience with a complimentary rental of a traditional training uniform.
The Spirit of Ancient Martial Arts: Respect and Courtesy
Learning at an authentic Iaido dojo, not just a show for tourists, focuses on the spirit of ancient martial arts. The principle of 'beginning and ending with respect' is a crucial aspect of this training and an invaluable lesson for all students.
Direct instruction from a master with the highest rank in Japan
In this authentic samurai experience, you will receive direct instruction from Master Sudo, who holds a 9th dan rank. In Iaido, the highest rank is 10th dan, but only a few people in Japan have achieved it. The 10th dan is an honorary rank that can only be awarded to those over 75 years old. Therefore, 9th dan is effectively the highest practical rank in Japan.
Distinguishing Features of Iaido
Iaido is characterized by its forms, which are based on the concept of encountering an enemy while 'being seated' in everyday life. Emphasizing the technique of drawing and cutting with the sword from its scabbard, Iaido differs from Kendo, which begins with the opponents already acknowledging each other as adversaries.
Mugairyu: A Historic Swordsmanship School Founded in 1693
Mugairyu is a historic swordsmanship school established in 1693. Its founder, Tsuji Gettan, opened a dojo in Ichigaya. It's noteworthy that Tsuji Gettan is said to be a descendant of the Koga ninja.
Enlightenment at a Zen Temple
Tsuji Gettan achieved enlightenment at Kyukoji, a Zen temple. He often stated, 'The sword and Zen are one and the same.' The 'Mu' in 'Mugairyu' signifies 'Zen' itself. Tsuji Gettan, a Zen practitioner and scholar, had more than 1,000 disciples, including the heads of 32 feudal domains in the Edo period.
Mugairyu: Strongest Swordsmanship School
The enduring strength of Mugairyu as a martial art can be understood from its historical significance. By the end of the Edo period and into the mid-Meiji era, two of the three renowned swordsmen known as 'The Three Greats of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police' were practitioners of Mugairyu, highlighting its long-standing reputation as a dominant swordsmanship school.
Free Rental of Dogi and Hakama
Participants can experience Iaido wearing authentic Dogi and Hakama (a suit for Samurai Sword Training), provided for free by the Musashinokuni Mugaikai. It's an opportunity to feel like a real samurai.
