About Noh and Kyogen
Together Known as Nohgaku: The World’s Oldest Performing Art
Nohgaku, Japan's prestigious traditional stage art, comprises two elements: Noh and Kyogen. Continuously performed for over 650 years since the Muromachi period (1336–1573), it has long enjoyed the patronage of samurai and feudal lords and is considered the world’s oldest traditional performing art. Recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, Nohgaku has received high acclaim both domestically and internationally.
Differences Between Noh and Kabuki
Noh was favored by the samurai society and was treated as a highly formalized "official entertainment" (Shikigaku) by the shogunate during the Edo period, giving it a prestigious status. Kabuki, on the other hand, developed as a form of theater for the general public. The most noticeable distinction is that Noh actors perform wearing Noh masks (though some roles do not require masks), while Kabuki actors wear white makeup and bold kumadori face paint.
